We the People

Last week Wired.com published the results of an investigation involving KISSmetrics and their ethically questionable practice of placing an “undeletable cookie” on users’ computers that allowed users to be tracked across multiple web sites…even when those users did not wish to be tracked.  While the results may have been good, the means used to obtain them were not. So it’s telling and commendable that KISSmetrics customers like Hulu and Spotify immediately suspended their use after being contacted by Wired and learning of the practice.   To see this happen, knowing how much time and energy our digital measurement community has spent developing and evangelizing the Web Analysts Code Of Ethics, is quite troubling.

I was recently at the National Archives in Washington DC, where I stood next to my fellow citizens and viewed the founding documents of our country, and perhaps I am being sentimental about this, but I can’t help but draw some comparisons between the importance of those documents that laid ... There is no Spoon ~ A Lesson in Data Governance

“Do not try to bend the spoon — that’s impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth: there is no spoon.”

It is true that there is no spoon, no magic potion, or super-shiny new piece of technology that will solve of your digital measurement issues, solve your implementation issues, or create that ever elusive value in the investment that your company has made in time, talent, and money in this world of digital measurement in which we are all working.

Over my next few blog posts we will explore the core components that are fundamental steps that companies should be taking and excelling in to be able to truly create and find that value.

  • Data Governance
  • Optimization, testing, and analysis
  • Data Architecture
  • The dreaded implementations

Chapter 1 – The mystery of the missing governance.

As we at Keystone Solutions are working with our clients to create sustainable digital ecosystems. We are called on more and more to help bridge the gap between digital, data governance and resource / technology issues.   The biggest... Read the rest of this post

Death and Taxes and ?

“in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” - Ben Franklin
At some point we have all heard some variation of this quote, and if not you just have.  This rings true especially this weekend as the procrastinators out there wait till the last minute to pay their tithes to Uncle Sam.  But I do wonder if most people really think that death and taxes the only things can be said to be certain.  I think not.  Here is my proposal for other items to be added to this list, with my filtered view of the world through my web analytics tinted glasses.

Internet Explorer 6 is the devil.  This should need no further explanation.
No matter how much time, money, and energy you have invested in making a product, there are those that will claim that it should be free.  And if you do not give in, and there are other free options out there, there will be haters.

Web Analytics professionals are chatty and thirsty folks.  Check out the Web Analytics Wednesdays from around the globe.  If you give them beer, they will come and chat.  Oh... I and love them for that.  Just saying.

140 characters is enough to impact an entire industry
Passion is as rare as kryptonite and some organizations wither in its presence.   Don’t hamper the people on your team, in your company that have this passion.   Find outlets for them.  Become their cheerleader.  Push them to take that passion and do things that they and enjoy and will ultimately benefit the whole organization.

The Keystone team flat out knows how to attack sushi.  Don’t believe it?  Track us down and we will show you.
Pie charts will never die.   As much as some folks hate them, there are those that equally love them.  Crazy people that use comic sans and IE6.

Jason Thompson will cook amazing things and then taunt people by posting the pictures on the interwebs.

I will never call it Adobe SiteCatalyst. It will forever be Omniture.  Long live the Green!
and last.... everyone has regrets... deal with it and move on.

Awards for Excellence 2011 – Thank You

This will be the last post about this I promise!   As most of you know the podcast that I co-founded and produce was not only nominated for but won the first ever Award for Excellence for Innovator/Technology of the year.   I was in such shock and overwhelmed when they announced it that I fee like I rushed through the little speech.    Now that I have had a bit to reflect on everything there are a few last things I want to say about this.

First, thank you again.  Thank you to those who nominated us, thank you to those who voted for us, thank you for selecting this podcast as the winner.

Thank you Gretchen! And though this will not be nearly as clever as the Joe Megibow, speech where he thanked his family, I have to thank them.   My wife has been extremely supportive from the very beginning.  Without her support for all the time I sit and edit podcasts in the evening with my headphones on lost in the laptop this would not be possible.

Thank you Adam.  You befriended me on twitter months before we started the podcast and you were excited and into this project from the beginning.  Thank you for not just deleting the emails that I sent you about starting this process.  Thank you for lending your vast knowledge to the podcast and the community.

Thank you James and Gary.  Both of you guys really stepped up to help us get this podcast off the ground.

Thank you to all of our guests.  I know that the listeners would have gotten tired of just hearing the same folks every week.  You variety of backgrounds and experience help keep this podcast fresh and entertaining.

Thank you to all of our listeners.  Holy Wicked Downloads Batman.  Nearly 80,000 to date!  Your overwhelming response to this is what drives us to continue and improve.

Thank you to the WAA!  Thank you for putting together the Gala and the awards.  We were humbled to be listed alongside the other nominees and finalists.

Shamelessly copied from the Web Analytics Association's web site.

The Beyond Web Analytics podcast should pretty much say it all. They've had pretty much every top person in the industry as a guest and take the time to discuss the thinking, philosophy and application of web analytics in an easy to follow discussion format. Much has been gained from listening to the episodes and they have positively influenced plans and development in the WA arena.

The podcast is product agnostic which is also nice.

There are other sources out there but they tend to be focused on a particular product or service and presented by an evangelist. Beyond Web Analytics dispenses with the thinly veiled sales pitch and instead delivers what anyone who's interested in the overall subject of web analytics wants and needs: a presentation of concepts, ideas and strategies that goes beyond products and vendors.

This podcast represents a unique resources on the web. What's more, the nearly 40 episodes cover all aspects of web analytics from best practices to strategies to usually ignored subjects like WA career development and finding/retaining WA talent. It is doubtful there is any other online WA resource that spans the web analytics world as comprehensively as this podcast.

Thank you to my friends and colleagues.   Your support and participation on the podcasts and being about to share this moment at the Gala with so many of you is something I will treasure forever.

Thank you to the guests that we have not had on the show yet.  We look forward to getting to know you and sharing the conversation with our listeners.

Thank you to our Sponsors.  IQ Workforce has been great and even provided the shiny microphone we used at eMetrics to record some in person interviews.  Thanks Corry!

And finally, thank you to my Mom.  I wish she could have seen this.

Standing on the shoulders of giants – Updated

Update!  The Beyond Web Analytics Podcast has won the 2011 WAA Award for Excellence Innovator/Technology of the year award!

Earlier this month I was thrilled and honored that the Beyond Web Analytics podcast I started with Adam Greco had been nominated for 2 WAA Awards of Excellence! When searching for the right words to express my gratitude to all of the amazing guests, hosts, and listeners of the podcast my mind kept drifting back to this quote.

“If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants” - Sir Isaac Newton

In the past year we have recorded 41 podcasts with over 74,000 total downloads.  And through this process I have been fortunate to not only work along side longtime industry luminaries like Adam Greco, Gary Angel, and James Dutton, but I have also been able to talk with and get to know countless others along the way that I now count among my friends.  Each of them willing to give of their time and expertise to not just the podcast, but to the digital measurement community as well.Last year at XChange John Lovett asked me what my motivation was for starting this podcast.  I will tell you as I told him then, that it started out as I just wanted to do a podcast to be able to give back to this amazing community that has been so welcoming to me.   And it is truly that.  I am very proud of the work we have done and excited about the work left to be done.

I would like to those those who thought enough of our podcast to nominate it for such an honor.  I would also like to thank IQ Workforce and eMetrics ( Jim Sterne ) for helping us promote the podcast and giving us the exposure and audience to really help it grow.  I would be remiss if I did not thank our great listeners and guests who are the backbone of this effort.

Thank you to all the of the giants that have let me and the podcast stand on their shoulders.

-Rudi

Thank you to all of our listeners and guests! It is all of you that has made this possible.
